3 Reasons Why You Should ALWAYS Attend Your Academy Seminars and Promotions Ceremonies
In our social media obsessed world we often forget the importance of being face to face with others.Learning from others as a collective group who share the same interest has insurmountable benefits. There is power in being connected to others who are active in the same endeavor. As an active competitor or not, taking part in the Jiu-Jitsu lifestyle will, without a doubt, enable growth in skill and body awareness. But to maximize the return on our self-investment we need to participate in more than a normal class session. We need to set aside time (and money) for seminars. Here are three reasons and benefits of attending a seminar taught by someone you admire and/or who has achieved great success in the ever-growing world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
1. Supercharge Your Instruction:
Having the chance to learn a particular skillset from a high level competitor’s game will supercharge your own. Seminars are packed full of information for students and instructors at every level.
Details are carefully explained on each movement, but also being able to interact with the visiting Professor/Instructor is priceless. This dialogue can bring your game to the next level.
Jiu-Jitsu, at times, can be isolating, monotonous and very frustrating. Without exposure to different points of view, we can miss new ideas that can impact future results. The educational aspect of a seminar reveals to us new ways of conducting our training and helps us discover how to be more productive.
2. Connecting, Bonding, and Networking:
Many falsely believe that since they can now access a plethora of Jiu-Jitsu information via the Internet that the days of live seminars are done. This can’t be any further from the truth. The value of workshops comes from the human connections that occur in the process.
Professors and competitors from other regions of the world can become valuable resources for training in other academies, be it local, out of state, or in other countries. Collaboration is the key to networking. People can help each other uncover ideas and spark inspiration when they get to know each other on a personal level.
Jiu-Jitsu clinics are a unique in the sense that it will one of the few times one will see our professors, instructors and coaches as students and this will clarify that learning never stops, that regardless of our level there is always something new to be absorbed. This aspect is very important in that it will deepen your connection with your instructor as you realize that your guide is also a traveler.
3. Broadening your Spectrums:
Seminars held in our respective academies are ways in which professors lend their support to us by searching and connecting us with experts in situations that we will definitely find ourselves in, specialist in positions that we have in common, or techniques that they believe we should develop. Sometimes it’s their way of showing us the broader spectrum of Jiu-Jitsu by bringing the legends of the art and superstars of our sport to assist us in developing good habits, solidifying our fundamentals, and humbling us.
Attending Belt Promotions:
While not exactly a seminar, belt promotions are another example of connecting, bonding, and rejoicing in the success of people in the academy. This ceremony is not only a day to celebrate those being promoted, but also more importantly for those who helped their teammates achieve such monumental feats. Each team member plays a valuable role for each other. This is a never-ending journey of hammer and nails. Without each person who attends class on a regular basis nothing would be possible in this art. It is an amazing way of bonding with all your teammates and coaches due to all the emotions poured out in these ceremonies. It is an incredible feeling watching your peers exhaust themselves in some tests and complete tasks through sheer will power. Its amazing to have others watch you go through it and attain the coveted grade, which is only an affirmation of all your hard work.
We are all valued and needed. Coaches look on with pride at those being newly belted and those who helped carry on the spirit of Jiu-Jitsu by challenging each individual who will also soon follow in the footsteps of their predecessors.
